As the sun set on the horizon of Australia, a peculiar tradition emerged from its land. Known as bonded servitude or assignment, it was an odd practice where an individual could sell themselves into bondage in order to pay off debts or even just for the opportunity to immigrate to the country.
The concept may sound barbaric today, but during the early days of Australian colonization, there was a great demand for labor. In this unique system, the “master” would provide food, lodging and protection in exchange for the person’s labor. The servant could then repay their debt by working off the amount over a set period of time.
One peculiar tradition that arose from this custom was what is now known as “The Australian Bonded Servitude’s Dinner”. It was believed that on the evening before a servant was to be emancipated, their master would prepare them one final meal as a gesture of goodwill and gratitude for the service rendered during their bondage. This last supper usually consisted of an array of delicious dishes that reflected the master’s appreciation towards his servant.
Though this tradition has long been abolished and considered a dark chapter in Australian history, the concept of “The Australian Bonded Servitude’s Dinner” remains as an intriguing part of its past. It serves as a reminder of how far society has come in terms of human rights and equality, while also acknowledging the struggles that our ancestors had to endure.
